Main Beach, located on the northern end of the island, is the extrovert. It’s where families come to picnic, spread out colorful beach towels & umbrellas, surf the next big wave, ride a skateboard, enjoy a game of volleyball, or a round of putt-putt, and dine at either Sandbar Amelia Island or Salt Life Food Shack. It’s a natural gathering spot for visitors looking to combine beach time with plenty of activity.
Vibe: Energetic, family-friendly, social.
Peters Point offers laid-back convenience. Centrally located on the island, Peters Point is popular without being overcrowded. With ample parking, indoor and outdoor showers, and a picnic area, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The shoreline feels really wide here, making it great for long walks, shell hunting, and setting up portable shade for a full day by the water. It’s also one of the best places to surf fish, and see groups of horseback riders along the shoreline. NOTE: Driving on the beach for Nassau County residents is permitted here.
Vibe: Welcoming, convenient, local.
In between the major beach access points are long stretches of sand where the crowds really thin out. If you like peaceful beach days where the soundtrack is mostly waves and gulls, then one of these accesses has your name on it. Here, expect to see folks relaxing in the sun, reading the latest novel, and wading in the surf. You may find yourself taking a long walk without passing another person. These lesser-known sections remind visitors that even during summer’s busiest season, Amelia Island still offers room for everyone to spread out.
Vibe: Peaceful, uncrowded, relaxing.
Founded in 1935 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis as a beach destination for African Americans during segregation, Burney Park at American Beach remains one of Amelia Island’s most meaningful and popular destinations. Visitors can not only spend time playing in the surf, but they can also explore a chapter of Florida history that continues to inspire and educate at the A.L. Lewis Museum. Also located at American Beach is Florida’s tallest sand dune. Standing 60 feet tall and spanning over 8.5 acres, NaNa dune is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the National Park Service. NOTE: Driving on the beach for Nassau County residents is permitted here.
Vibe: Historic, meaningful, reflective.
At the island’s southern tip, Amelia Island begins to feel like “old Florida” and wonderfully wild. Amelia Island State Park is where salt marshes meet up with the Atlantic, creating one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes on the island. Visitors come here to kayak, horseback ride, fish, birdwatch, and shell. The scenery shifts as constantly as the tide moving through the marshes, and wetlands. Wildlife is abundant here with many species of migratory birds, butterflies, gopher tortoises, deer, marsh rabbits, and plenty of marine life. Here, it’s less about sitting in a beach chair and more about experiencing Mother Nature.
Vibe: Wild, adventurous, untamed.
The beach at Fort Clinch State Park, on the northern end of Amelia Island, takes on an entirely different personality. Driftwood, maritime forests, winding trails (for walking or biking), and a plethora of wildlife create a setting that feels somewhat removed from the modern world. Beachcombers search for shark teeth (the best section of beach to find them!) while birders, depending on the time of year, look for Painted Buntings, Bald Eagles, Wood Storks, and many more of our feathered friends. Historic Fort Clinch adds yet another layer of discovery, blending nature and history into one single experience. This is the beach for nature and history lovers.
Vibe: Natural, historic, quiet.
Whether you’re looking for activity, solitude, history, wildlife, or wide-open views, there’s a spot of beach for every personality.
