Fall looks good on Amelia Island. The summer heat begins to ease a bit, mornings feel a little cooler, and suddenly spending the day outside sounds like a good idea. Add a packed calendar of festivals, food, music, and special events, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to plan an autumn island getaway – 26 to be exact.

Make Friday night an art night! On the fourth Friday of each month (beginning in October), participating Amelia Island galleries stay open past closing time for an evening of art, refreshments, and fun. Meet local artists, catch a demonstration, hear a little live music, or maybe stumble upon something completely unexpected. Stay tuned!
Thirteen miles of Atlantic shoreline + beautiful fall weather = beach time! Take a long morning walk, hunt for shark teeth and shells, spread out a blanket with a good book or simply kick off your shoes and enjoy having your toes in the sand. Fewer crowds in the fall make it easy to find a spot on the beach to call your own.
Calling all foodies! The 4th Annual Amelia Island Cookout, hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, October 15–18, brings together acclaimed chefs, pitmasters, mixologists and winemakers for four delicious days. More than 20 curated experiences range from chef demonstrations and collaborative dinners to fishing with chefs, live music, After Glow parties and the signature oceanfront cookout overlooking the dunes and Atlantic.
Get ready to move! The Amelia Island Dance Festival returns September 10–13 for its eighth season, bringing professional, emerging, student, and local dancers together for four days of performances, workshops, and community events.
Trade the pavement for a walk on the wild side (or bike ride) through Egan’s Creek Greenway. Miles of trails wind through marsh and maritime habitat, where you may spot herons, snakes, egrets, turtles, rabbits, deer, and – from a proper distance – an alligator or two.
Take a short drive inland (25 miles) to Callahan, Florida, for an old-fashioned dose of fall fun at the Northeast Florida Fair, October 8–18. Think livestock shows, exhibits, rides, live entertainment, fair food, and all the sights, sounds, and excitement of a traditional county fair.
Amelia Island has been around for a while, and apparently, not everyone has left! Take a ghost tour through historic downtown Fernandina Beach, where tales of pirates, soldiers, saloon keepers, and mysterious happenings add a little goosebump-worthy fun to a fall evening.
Slow down and wander. Fernandina Beach Historic District is filled with colorful Victorian architecture, locally owned boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and bars. Start near the waterfront and work your way up Centre Street, leaving plenty of time for detours on the side streets.
Cheers to fall! Island Hop Craft Beer & Spirits Fest returns to Central Park, October 3, bringing local and regional craft beverages, live music, food trucks, and plenty of island vibes to Fernandina Beach.
Cool cats, this one’s for you. The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival, October 4–11, fills the island with jazz performances and special events featuring talented musicians and plenty of toe-tapping tunes.
Fall mornings were made for paddling. Join a local outfitter and glide through quiet creeks, rivers and marshes while keeping an eye out for dolphins, birds, and other coastal wildlife.
Say hello to one of Amelia Island’s most recognizable landmarks – the Amelia Island Lighthouse. Tucked away beneath moss-draped oaks, Florida’s oldest existing lighthouse is a reminder that maritime history runs deep around here. To register for a tour of the lighthouse, please call 904-310-3350 or visit the Atlantic Recreation Center at 2500 Atlantic Avenue. Tour fee is due at the time of registration.
Saturday mornings are for shopping! Rain or shine, you can head downtown to browse the Fernandina Beach Market Place for produce, baked goods, plants, and local specialties. The Arts Market, adjacent to the Farmers Market on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, offers an eclectic mix of visual and decorative art, home decor, jewelry, and seasonal offerings, all made by local artisans in our community.
Fall is prime time to get outside. Walk the beach, explore a maritime forest, watch the marsh change with the tide, or grab your binoculars for some birdwatching. From Amelia Island State Park on the south end to Fort Clinch on the north, wild Amelia is never far away.
One of fall’s greatest pleasures? Eating outside without melting! Grab a waterfront table, settle onto a patio beneath the oaks, or find a rooftop spot overlooking the ocean. The Atlantic breezes, marsh views, and colorful Amelia River sunsets will make the dining experience worth your while.
Two wheels are a great way to see Amelia Island when temperatures begin to cool. Cruise beneath the tree-canopied trails at Fort Clinch, follow the Amelia Island Trail, or take an easy ride along the beach. Bring your own bike or rent one locally and make a day of it.
You don’t have to fill every minute. In fact, we recommend that you don’t. Find an uncrowded stretch of sand, watch the boats drift along the Amelia River, stare out at the marsh, or simply enjoy your morning coffee on the porch. Consider this your official permission to do absolutely nothing.
Fall (November) marks the beginning of a very special season along our coast. Endangered North Atlantic right whales migrate to the waters off Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia to give birth and nurse their calves. Keep your eyes on the horizon; you never know what you might see.
Don’t call it a day until you’ve watched the sun go down over the marsh or the water. Head to the downtown waterfront park, book an evening boat cruise, or find a west-facing perch overlooking the marsh. Amelia Island sunsets have a way of stealing the show.
Taste your way around town during Taste of Amelia on October 24, a culinary crawl bringing together local chefs, restaurants and beverage partners for an afternoon devoted to deliciousness. Come hungry!
Eight flags. Pirates. Shrimpers. Victorian millionaires. A Civil War fort. Amelia Island has stories to tell, and the Amelia Island Museum of History is a great place to start. Housed in the former Nassau County Jail, the museum offers tours and explores thousands of years of local history.
Take a walk through historic Fernandina Beach and look up! Colorful Victorian homes, ornate details, and wraparound porches are just a few glimpses into the island’s past. Wander the historic district on your own or take a guided tour to learn the stories behind some of the city’s most beautiful old buildings.
Dolphins and Manatees in the river. Roseate spoonbills in the marsh. Deer on Egan’s Creek Greenway. Wild horses on nearby Cumberland Island. Amelia Island is surrounded by wild spaces, and fall brings plenty of opportunities to slow down, look around, and see who else is here.
Arrrgh you ready for an adventure? Amelia Island’s pirate history makes it easy to channel your inner treasure hunter. Take a pirate cruise, learn about the colorful characters who once sailed these waters, or search the beach for your own treasure – preferably in the form of shark teeth and shells.
Take your downward dog outside. Roll out your mat for a beach yoga class, or find your own peaceful spot overlooking something serene. Cooler temperatures and coastal scenery make fall an ideal time to stretch, breathe, and recharge.
Okay, maybe “jacket” is optimistic. This is Florida, after all. But those first crisp mornings and cool evenings are reason enough to celebrate. Grab a light layer and get outside.
Fall on Amelia Island isn’t about watching the leaves change. It’s about letting the island change you.
