Amelia Island’s natural beauty has long been both an inspiration for artists and a draw for talented creators from around the world who have relocated here. A great way to sample the island’s art in a festive atmosphere is during the monthly Artrageous Artwalk, held downtown on the second Saturday of each month from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Participating galleries host art events so visitors and locals alike can peruse the various types of art, enjoy refreshments, and meet the artists. Here’s how you can explore and experience the artsy side of Amelia Island.
Start off in Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach on Centre Street. You won’t easily miss the Blue Door Artists gallery. A set of colorful stairs leads the way to the contemporary space featuring a variety of mediums and genres from twelve unique island artists including Theresa Daily and her award winning land and seascape paintings that can be seen in many private and public collections in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Art On Centre is located further down Centre Street and features works from living American artists using various mediums in a contemporary theme. Their mission is to create personal connections with artists and clients – bringing art to life in a welcoming and approachable environment.
If you’re short on time, but want to sample some of the local creations, the Island Art Association Gallery on 2nd Street is the perfect place to stop in to view works from more than 50 local exhibiting artists. More than 200 local artists are members, ranging from photographers and sculptors to painters and jewelry makers.
Also on 2nd Street and not to be missed is 2nd Story Gallery & Studios offering a variety of art work by many local artististic talents. Visit their gallery upstairs and enjoy not only the art, but the wonderful views of downtown Fernandina! Meander over to 3rd Street’s Clay Times Art Center that features handmade gifts & home furnishings of clay, glass, oil, watercolor, and other fine works by local & nationally renowned artists — Tour their studios to see crafting in action, or sign up for classes to make your own art!
Stroll just off Centre Street to the corner of 3rd and Ash and look for the whimsical pink house that is the home of Trish Tipton’s Slightly Off Centre, a gallery of fine art and folk art, glass art, paintings, photography and pottery. The space feels as though you are stepping into her living room with its cozy, whimsical vibe and variety of pieces available.
The historic space also houses Gallery C, owned and operated by artist Carol Winner who creates a wide variety of art, including acrylic paintings, 2D and 3D mixed media, jewelry and handbags. 4th Street houses The Julie Delfs Gallery Of Fernandina Beach where professional resin-epoxy artist, Julie Delfs showcases not only her amazing and unique coastal-inspired artwork but also doubles a working art studio where the public can take epoxy-resin art classes and purchase local art and home decor.
From downtown, head south on 8th Street to award-winning Casey Matthews Fine Art. Casey creates rich paintings with multi-media surfaces that are both visually intriguing and full of energy. They incorporate expressive color, fluid movement, and strong elements of design.
Casey has sold to private collectors throughout North America and Europe. Also on 8th Street is Shady Ladies Art Studio, where creativity grows. Shady Ladies is not only an art studio and gallery but home to three local artists who give art classes, have monthly themed shows, gifts and more!
Head toward the beach on Atlantic Avenue to The Atlantic Contemporary, the primary destination for internationally represented contemporary artists on Amelia Island. Not only will you find thoughtful and compelling exhibitions, but unique works that will add dimension and design to your home.
Atlantic Contemporary is an oasis of beauty and style for collectors, designers and the curious. Continue on towards the south end of the island to The Palette Shop, a fine art gallery and paint workspace offering private art lessons, group painting workshops, and private parties.
