Downtown Fernandina Beach is a full-blown adventure when you see it from a kid’s point of view. Every corner holds a treasure, and every storefront is just a sample of what’s to come inside. A simple stroll turns into a day packed with discovery, treats, and a little bit of sea-faring magic.
Start your adventure with something yummy. Head over to Vintage Donuts and build your own cake donut masterpiece—start with your icing, then choose a topping, and finally, add a drizzle. Boom! Part breakfast, part creativity, and all delicious.
Next, play a game called Find the pirate. Honestly, you never know where you might see a random pirate on Centre Street, but we do know where two always stand guard. Located just outside the historic Palace Saloon, one pirate keeps watch over Centre Street while another is waiting to be discovered outside Corner Copia (the store specializing in pirate souvenirs). Two pirates, one mission: can your crew spot them both?
From there, wander toward the waterfront and take on a counting challenge—how many shrimp boats can you see in the harbor? Fernandina Beach is known as the “Shrimping Capital of the World,” and those boats aren’t just part of the scenery. They’re part of the island’s story.
Speaking of history, take a step back in time with a visit to the Amelia Island Museum of History. With interactive exhibits and stories of pirates, explorers, and shrimpers, it’s history told in a way that captures kids’ imaginations, and maybe even sparks a few questions.
Of course, no kid-powered day is complete without a sweet adventure. Hmmm. Will it be the old-fashioned charm of Cinnamon Bear Country Store, the fudge made with love at Fernandina’s Fantastic Fudge, or will Nana Teresas’s Bake Shop have that special treat you’re looking for? (Pro tip: there’s no wrong answer here.)
For a quieter moment, step inside The Book Loft to hunt for a story set right here on Amelia Island. Who knows? You might just find a pirate tale that brings the island’s history to life in a whole new way.
Time to burn off some energy with a round of putt-putt at Gregor MacGregor’s Mini Links & Drinks—a lush, garden course that’s as entertaining as it is challenging. Or, switch things up with a roll (or two) at Duck Pinz, where miniature bowling means big-time fun for all. Start a family competition at either of these two spots.
Before the day winds down, take your kid’s adventure to the next level. Climb aboard Amelia Island Pirate Voyages for a swashbuckling good time on the water. Complete with booming cannons, treasure, good music, and a lively crew of real pirates, this is the kind of experience kids will be talking about long after the ship docks, and long after they get home.
