Christmas, According to Dickens: Amelia Island Brings a Victorian Holiday to Life

12th Annual Dickens on Centre Transforms Historic Fernandina Beach into the World of “A Christmas Carol”

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2026) – Nearly two centuries after Charles Dickens helped shape how generations imagine Christmas, Amelia Island is once again bringing his vision of the season to life. The 12th annual Dickens on Centre, Dec. 11–13, transforms the historic streets of downtown Fernandina Beach, Florida, into a Victorian Christmas village inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The free festival combines one of the largest Christmas markets in the Southeast with costumed characters, theatrical entertainment, old-fashioned holiday traditions, family experiences and a few decidedly modern touches, including a glowing procession and drone show.

Published in 1843, A Christmas Carol arrived as many of the traditions now associated with Christmas were taking shape in Victorian Britain. Dickens’ enduring story of generosity, family and fellowship became part of that transformation and remains one of the world’s most recognizable Christmas tales. More than 180 years later, Dickens on Centre draws on that legacy to offer something increasingly rare during the modern holiday rush: the chance to step inside Christmas past.

Set against Fernandina Beach’s historic architecture, the festival creates its own Dickensian world, with names and characters from the classic story woven throughout the weekend. Visitors can wander Oliver’s Alley and Cratchit’s Corner, raise a glass in Fezziwig’s Courtyard, find family fun in Tiny Tim’s and venture out after dark for Marley’s Masquerade.

Highlights of this year’s celebration include:

  • The Dickens on Centre Christmas Market – One of the largest Christmas markets in the Southeast fills the historic downtown district with local and small-business vendors offering handcrafted gifts, holiday décor, specialty foods and more. The market stretches through aptly named enclaves including Oliver’s Alley, Cratchit’s Corner, Peddler’s Village and Artist’s Alley.
  • Tiny Tim’s – Younger visitors get their own corner of the Dickens world, with portraits with St. Nick, holiday movies at Old Vic Theatre alley, the Elves at Work tent and other family activities.
  • The Enchanted Village Snow Globe Experience – Christmas in Florida comes with a chance of snow inside the Enchanted Village, where families and friends can gather in private, snow-globe-inspired spaces for a light bite and a little Christmas magic. The popular experience regularly sells out, so advance reservations are recommended.
  • Fezziwig’s Courtyard – Named for the famously jovial host in A Christmas Carol, Fezziwig’s
Courtyard takes its cue from one of the story’s most memorable celebrations. Reservations
include festive fare and holiday beverages in a setting designed for lingering, laughing and raising a glass to the season.
  • Run Like the Dickens – Before the festivities get underway downtown, runners and walkers can dash into the season during this one-mile beach fun run at Main Beach Park. Victorian costumes, bonnets and top hats are encouraged, and four-legged companions are welcome.
  • Parade of Paws – Even the dogs get into character. Amelia Island’s most dapper pups parade through downtown in their holiday finest, competing in categories including Best Victorian, Most Original and Looks Most Like Owner.
  • Holiday Entertainment – Throughout the festival, stages and gathering places come alive with theatrical performances, live music, costumed characters, street entertainers and holiday movies, adding to the feeling that visitors have wandered into a Christmas story.
  • Dickens After Dark: Marley’s Masquerade – When night falls, Dickens takes a darker turn. This adults-only soirée draws inspiration from the ghosts and revelry of A Christmas Carol, with Victorian attire, stilt walkers, jugglers, live music, holiday magic and a dose of mystery.
  • Make It a Holiday Getaway – Dickens on Centre unfolds throughout historic downtown
Fernandina Beach, where locally owned restaurants, boutiques, historic inns and bed-and-
breakfasts make it easy to turn the festival into a weekend escape. Beyond downtown, visitors can pair Christmas past with Amelia Island’s 13 miles of beaches and a calendar of holiday events taking place throughout December.

For 12 years, Dickens on Centre has given Amelia Island its own distinctive take on the Christmas festival: not simply lights, shopping and entertainment, but an immersive celebration rooted in the story and Victorian traditions that helped define the holiday for generations.
