DESCRIPTION:​Madama Butterfly is one of opera’s most enduring tales of unrequited love. Puccini’s poignant score follows the tragic tale of Cio-Cio San\, a young Japanese girl who falls in love with American naval officer Pinkerton\, with devastating consequences. \nAmelia Island Opera’s concert performance of this exquisite piece will feature Cuban-American soprano Elaine Alvarez. Ms. Alvarez burst onto the international opera scene in 2007\, making a break-out company debut with her soulful portrayal of Mimì in Puccini’s La bohème at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Most recently Ms. Alvarez returned to the Metropolitan Opera to cover the title characters in Florencia en el Amazonas and Madama Butterfly. Alongside Ms. Alvarez is a cast composed of some of the finest opera singers in the country and the “University Singers” chorus from Jacksonville University\, all accompanied by an orchestra led by conductor Keith Chambers. \nThis concert-only production of Madama Butterfly will have a running time of 2 hours\, not including a 20-minute intermission. It will be sung in Italian with projected English supertitles. The house will open 1 hour before the performance time. More than a bar band or blues band\, as they’re frequently labeled\, this is a band that played with Carl Perkins in addition to Muddy Waters.

SUMMARY:2025 Amelia Island Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Amelia Island Book Festival will continue on Saturday\, March 1st with The Authors’ Expo and Readers’ Extravaganza at Fernandina Beach Middle School from 10am-4pm. This is a free event to our community and the most prominent way for guests to take part in our Festival. During the Festival\, there will be opportunities to engage with authors in an up-close and personal way while over 100 authors showcase and sell their books. The Festival will have Author Break-Out Sessions and Panel Discussions throughout the day with our ten featured authors. \nWe’re honored to welcome back our former Honorary Chairman\, David Baldacci\, to participate in an author panel discussion with a book signing to follow! We are so excited to expand the Kids Zone this year with fun games\, activities\, a bounce house\, children’s author book signings\, food trucks\, and more! We’re thrilled to host our local Olympian\, Poe Pinson\, and her dad Kenny Pinson\, as they share about their children’s book\, Poey and Click. We’ll also have local author Lizzette Harris sharing her children’s book\, Marcus Finds Fantastic Flavors\, with her son. \nThis is a family-friendly event and we encourage children of all ages to come out! There will be many opportunities to celebrate literacy in a casual\, fun\, festive atmosphere.
