SUMMARY:Our Town: Gullah/Geechee Culture
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Queen Quet\, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation\, in a powerful “Histo-Musical Presentation” of song\, story\, and culture. The first to represent her community before the United Nations\, she brings the spirit and legacy of the Gullah/Geechee people to life—live and unforgettable. \nAs part of a 10-month discussion series facilitated by T.R. Richardson\, This month’s program will feature Queen Quet. She is a published author\, computer scientist\, lecturer\, mathematician\, historian\, columnist\, preservationist\, environmental justice advocate\, environmentalist\, film consultant\, and “The Art-ivist.” \nHer “histo-musical” presentation gives us insight into descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice\, indigo\, and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. The nature of their enslavement on isolated islands and coastal plantations created a unique culture with deep African retentions that are clearly visible in the Gullah Geechee people’s distinctive arts\, crafts\, foodways\, music\, and language. \nThis program is complimentary.\nPlease RSVP.
