“Hometown Teams,” a traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibit that explores how work shaped America, opens on August 18th, 2018 at the Amelia Island Museum of History for a six-week showing. This fascinating, multimedia experience, which is free and open to the public, is being brought to Amelia Island by the nonprofit Florida Humanities Council, which partners with community organizations around the state to bring high-quality cultural programs to Floridians. To celebrate the opening of this exhibit, the Amelia Island Museum of History - 233 S. 3rd St - will host a Pep Rally for our community featuring special guest Mary Walker, Athletic Director, Fernandina Beach High School. The presentation will be begin at 3 pm on Saturday, August 18th. Afterwards we will enjoy refreshments and unveil the new exhibit. “Hometown Teams” captures the stories that unfold on the neighborhood fields and courts, and the underdog heroics, larger-than-life legends, fierce rivalries and gut-wrenching defeats. For more than 100 years, sports have reflected the trials and triumphs of the American experience and helped shape the national character. Whether it is professional sports or those played on the collegiate or scholastic level, amateur sports or sports played by kids on the local playground, sports are everywhere in America. The exhibit will be on display at the Amelia Island Museum of History from August 18th - September 19th, 2018. In addition to Fernandina Beach, “Hometown Teams” travels to Dade City, Dunedin, Ft. Myers/Dunbar, Chipley, and Port St. Joe. “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America” is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Florida Humanities Council, which partners with community organizations around the state.
