Readers' Island: Book Festival is Coming
Books, writing, song and story are the emphasis over three days at the Amelia Island Book Festival, February 19-21. Whether you dream of escaping to a beautiful island to write your own story or prefer to enjoy diving into a book from the comfort of the beach, a quaint cafe, or a beautiful porch, this weekend has something for you: an opening concert, workshops, a children's corner, teen fest, and more. The 2015 Book Festival features Carolyn Curry, author of Suffer and Grow Strong, and former NFL player and coach Bill Curry. The three-day festival kicks off on Thursday evening, Febuary 19, from 7 to 9 pm at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with Zara Phillips, a dynamic and engaging songwriter, singer and author of Mother Me, a personal journey into motherhood from an adoptee's point of view.  A former backup singer for Bob Geldof and other British rock greats, the London-born Zara entertains with strong lyrical themes and powerful melodies, creating music that is both thought provoking and entertaining. On Friday, February 20, from 9 am to 4 pm, the Authors in Schools Program brings featured authors to visit thousands of students at all 15 of Nassau County schools. Kids from kindergarten through high school will participate in lively talks, readings and programs all aimed at kindling young people's interest in reading and fostering an enjoyment of books. If you are a would-be author, or just looking to increase your knowledge, join the annual Writers Workshop, Friday, February 20. Held at the FSCJ Betty P. Cook Nassau Center in Yulee from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm, you'll spend the day at sessions of your choice with authors and presenters covering a range of topics about writing, editing, and publishing. Saturday, February 21, take your pick or enjoy all of the following events:
  • Readers Extravaganza from 10 am to 3 pm at the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center. The community is invited to come meet and talk with dozens of authors; enjoy breakout sessions on topics of interest; bring the children to enjoy and a new and improved Teen Fest, this year featuring musicians, authors and contests. Learn to get published and enjoy free pizza.  Kids are always welcome, so drop the younger children at Kidz Corner, all for free.
  • The annual VyStar Readers Luncheon features keynote address by Carolyn Curry, author of Suffer and Grow Strong, The Life of Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas 1834-1907. Carolyn's husband, Bill Curry, will be there to introduce her. The luncheon will be held at the Woman's Club directly behind the Atlantic Recreation Center from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.  More about tickets here.
  • A reception and motivational program is courtesy of Hollie & Rick Keffer with Special Event Speaker Bill Curry, coach, motivator and author of Ten You Meet in the Huddle: Lessons from a Football Life. This talented, multi-award winning coach-turned author is sure to regale the audience with his NFL, ESPN, coaching stories as well as his inspiring style that has motivated organizations across the country. Carolyn will be on hand to introduce Bill at this event being held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm; at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club.  Space is limited, so reserve your seats early.
