Step back in time and discover 4000 years of life on the water’s edge here on Amelia Island. From the Timucua Native American tribe to Spanish and French explorers, from the lawless spirit of pirates to the dignified air of Victorian-era residents, Amelia Island has been home to diverse cultures that have left an exciting heritage.
Housed in the former Nassau County Jail, we are the first spoken history museum in the state of Florida. We continue our story-telling tradition with a variety of tours that cater to many interests and age levels. Walking Tours and Docent-led Museum Tours are scheduled regularly. Alternate tour times may be arranged for groups of four or more by contacting our Director of Education.
The Amelia Island Museum of History is excited to extend the use of our unique facility for receptions, dinners and lectures. If you or your organization wishes to reserve the Museum’s public areas you may do so by calling 904.261.7378 x.100 to determine availability.
Amenities:
AIMH’s facility is fully ADA compliant with an elevator, wheelchair ramp, Braille signs, and handicap accessible restrooms. Additionally, in the most recent Museum renovation, baby changing stations were added to all female and male identifying restrooms.
Guides for the hearing impaired were also created to allow everyone to experience our docent-led tour whether on their own or as part of a group (included in the attachment section). Currently, only a few of our exhibit or program videos are subtitled but AIMH is exploring the process and funding needed to make this a reality throughout the Museum.
For those who may have difficulty walking, AIMH has a wheelchair on site that is available at no charge and in a size that can accommodate some of the narrower doorways associated with a historic building.
