AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (May 2, 2011) – Visitors to northeast Florida’s Amelia Island now have more ways to check in and check out the high-tech “treasure” hunt known as the Amelia Island Geocaching Challenge. Created by the Amelia Island Convention & Visitors Bureau in 2010, the GPS-based Challenge begins when visitors check in and obtain an official entry form from a recently expanded list of participating hotel and lodging partners on the island. The form lists coordinates and clues to seven CVB-approved geocaches hidden at many of the island’s most popular sites. Visitors can now obtain an official entry form at 14 participating hotel and lodging partners.
Geocaching involves the use of a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) to search for hidden containers, or geocaches, identified only by a set of coordinates. According to geocaching.com, there are more than 1.3million active geocaches and an estimated five million geocachers worldwide.
“The Challenge has been well received by visitors, and families in particular,” said Gil Langley, President and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It is a fun and adventurous way to explore the island, and I am happy to see more of our hotel partners joining in.”
Visitors can join the Geocache Challenge when they stay at any of 14 participating inns, hotels and resorts on the island. The entry form they receive includes coordinates for the seven Amelia Island CVB geocaches, some of which contain coupons and other discounts they can use during their visit. Once completed, visitors can return the form to receive an official certificate of completion at the Amelia Island Visitor Center (102 Centre Street) and be registered to win a four-night stay at the Addison on Amelia, a luxurious 14-room bed and breakfast inn in downtown Fernandina Beach.
