AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (October 8, 2009) – The Fernandina Farmers Market recently placed second in the nationwide “Love Your Farmers Market” contest sponsored by LocalHarvest and Care2. With more than 98,000 votes, the contest encouraged U.S. residents to pick their favorite market. Fernandina Farmers Market placed second, out of more than 4,000 markets across the nation.
“The Fernandina Farmers Market has been a longtime favorite for locals and visitors alike,” said Gil Langley, President and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It is great to see them so well represented in a nationwide contest.”
Taking place from June 19 through September 17, the “Love Your Farmers Market” contest allowed voters to include a short review and comments about their favorite market. The Fernandina Farmers Market was the only Florida market to place in the Top 25. They won a $3,000 cash prize which they plan to use to promote their inaugural event, the Amelia Island Garden Show, which is scheduled for March 6 and 7, 2010. The Garden Show will feature more than 50 vendors, as well as a Butterfly Encounter, Raptor Experience and Ask the Expert Booth.
