Island Insider: Artist Casey Matthews

Posted on October 19, 2015 |
Arriving on Amelia Island by way of Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and New York City, artist Casey Matthews is known for her rich paintings with multi-media surfaces that are both visually intriguing and full of energy.  We asked her to share the places and experiences she loves the most. The gopher tortoises in her neighborhood took the top spot, followed by the following:

Favorite things to do:  hiking in Ft. Clinch, hunting for sharks' teeth, riding my bike on the new path along the south end of A1A, and gallery-hopping (don't miss the monthly Artrageous Artwalks.)

Locals knowTimoti's has the best fresh locally-caught seafood, Gilbert's BBQ on Saturdays (the line is usually out the door), go see Dan Voll play live music at the Green Turtle on Friday nights. Visit the downtown Farmers' market on Saturday mornings. We have three community theatres - go check out a show.

Where to find your own treasure:  shop Hunts Art & Artifacts, Lindy's Jewelry and the Blue Door Artists.

Splurge-worthy: The Spa at the Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island as well as dinner at  Salt, David's, or Espana.

Favorite souvenir: A 14K shark's tooth necklace from Lindy's Jewelry.

Best place to take photos:  Egans Creek or Fort Clinch, both great for long walks too.
